We recently watched the 2023 film You Hurt My Feelings with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tobias Menzies, and there is a great scene where Louis-Dreyfus's character admits to her husband (Menzies) that she's been pretending to like the earrings he keeps buying her year after year on their anniversary:
The scene continues with Menzies's character pointing out that he, too, has been pretending to like the sweaters she keeps gifting him. In greater depth, the movie explores the intended kindness — and sometimes the ultimate cruelty — of lying to spare the feelings of those we love. Of course, we all do it to a certain degree because it makes our relationships run more smoothly, but at what cost? What would happen if we expressed more trust in each other to handle honest feelings?
